She is best known for her role in the Will and Grace sitcom, playing Rosario Salazar from 1999 to 2006.

Rosario Salazar, a character in the sitcom, was an illegal immigrant from El Salvador and was only to appear in the show once but viewers loved her and she appeared many more times.

Debra Messing, who also played a character in the sitcom, mourned the late actress after news that she had died came through.

"Our dear Rosario has passed on, " Debra Messing said. Shelley had a career that spanned decades, but she will always be our dear Rosie.

"She was a kind soul with a huge heart and always had a smile on her face. All my love to Walter and the entire family, " she added.

In a biography, Morrison said that the character of Salazar was her favourite, saying that it reminded her of her own mother.

"Rosario is one of my all-time favorite characters," Morrison said in a biography released by her agent according to Cable News Network (CNN).

"She reminds me a lot of my own mother, who loved animals and children, but she would not suffer fools. It is very significant to me that we were able to show an older, Hispanic woman who is bright and smart and can hold her own," she added.
