Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior was among Kamba politicians who accompanied Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka during a visit to retired President Daniel Arap Moi's Kabarak home last week.
The Makueni senator’s presence in Kalonzo’s team to Moi’s home has elicited debate among a section of Kamba residents with claims that he could be Kalonzo’s successor as the Ukambani political kingpin.
There is an ongoing debate that Kalonzo could be 'grooming' the senator to take over from him.
Kilonzo Junior is among vocal Kamba politicians and often speaks on issues facing the community and the country at large.
According to political analyst Peter Ngure, the Makueni senator could be the next Kamba political kingpin.
Ngure observes that senator Junior is articulate and is more trusted to take over from Kalonzo as Kamba king-pin.
“Mutula Junior will be a force to reckon with when it comes to Kamba politics in the coming years,” Ngure said.
The analyst said the senator’s presence in Kalonzo’s team that visited Moi last week was not coincident.
He said Kilonzo Junior has the political appeal and persuasion to move masses.
Senator Kilonzo is serving his second term in office and there are speculations that he could bid to succeed Governor Kivutha Kibwana in 2022.
In July, renown political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi said Kilonzo Junior has the potential and qualities of ascending to the top seat (presidency).
The analyst also said the Makueni senator could also fit into opposition leader Raila Odinga's 'political shoes' as his successor.
Kilonzo Junior has not made it public on whether he will contest for the gubernatorial seat in 2022.
Last week, Kalonzo visited Moi at his Kabarak home accompanied by several Kamba politicians.
Kalonzo and Moi are said to have discussed on the country’s unity and reconciliation.
