Emerging details indicate that the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, otherwise known as 'Russia', is now having some of its patients sleep on the floor.
The sorry situation hit the spotlight after some photos taken from inside the congested health facility emerged, showing patients sleeping on the corridors due to a shortage of beds.
The hospital, according to the Daily Nation, has also compelled some patients who are unable to clear their bills to undergo the same, with new patients receiving first priority.
One such is Julius Akumu who has been forced to pass his nights on the cold floor for failing to pay up for the hospital's services and has as well been blocked from leaving.
"We have been placed on the corridors because there are few beds and newly admitted patients are given the first priority," Akumu was quoted by Nation on Sunday.
Confirming the situation, the facility Chief Executive Officer Peter Okoth noted that the hospital is as well grappling with a shortage of wards.
On Sunday alone, the facility admitted 59 male patients, all of whom are supposed to be housed in the 2 male wards having 40 beds, in addition to the present patients.
"We have a high demand for surgical services with many requiring them because of injuries and non-communicable diseases. We had an excess of over 19 patients but the ones who were on the floor were those on discharge," added Okoth.
