The budget of the DPP whose mandate is to prosecute criminal and corruption cases will not be cut according to proposals by the National Treasury.

The DPP ’s budget was spared because his office is pushing for prosecution of top corruption cases involving senior government officials and entities.

Last week, President Kenyatta said that more resources will be allocated to the prosecution office.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Judiciary and the Judiciary’s budget will also not be cut in the Treasury proposals to be tabled in Parliament on Thursday.

In the budgetary proposal presented to the Parliamentary Budgetary Committee on Tuesday, the National Treasury has proposed to cut Devolution budget by Sh6 Billion, Roads department by Sh6 Billion, ICT by Sh5.9 Billion, Police department by Sh257 Million, National Assembly by Sh2.6 Billion and Public Service Commission (PSC) by 2.4 Billion.

MPs will convene on Thursday to debate the proposed budget cuts even as some lawmakers have vowed to reject the 8% VAT proposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On Tuesday, Uhuru and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga met with their MPs in the push to persuade them to approve the 8% VAT on fuel.
