The plane according to a Cable News Network (CNN) is a Bombadier E-11A and crashed in Ghazni province.

The United States of America military has confirmed that the plane belongs to it.

Officials from the military have said that an investigation into how the aircraft came down is underway, denying claims by the Taliban that it was shot down in a missile strike.

"A U.S. Bombardier E-11A crashed today in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. While the cause of the crash is under investigation, there are no indications the crash was caused by enemy fire. We will provide additional information as it becomes available," Col. Sonny Leggett, a US military official said as quoted by CNN.

Reuters news agency reported a firefight between the Afghan national forces and the Taliban troops in an effort by the government troops to reach the charred wreckage of the ill-fated plane.

An order has been issued to the Afghan forces to retreat from the area of the plane crash after coming under fire from the Taliban.

In its statement, the US military did not confirm whether or not there were casualties or fatalities in the crash. The Taliban says that there were a number of dead bodies at the crash site.
