Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has defended Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on the allegations linking him to the fake gold scandal. The opposition leader spoke about this during the burial of Gusii medic David Ombati in Kitutu Chache North in Kisii County on Friday.
Raila said that they (Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta) decided to give the Interior docket to Matiang'i because they trust he will deal with corrupt leaders accordingly.
"Matiang'i is doing a great job. He worked in my office when I was the Prime Minister. He is a hard worker. This docket of dealing with corruption we placed him there to help us fight the vice. Now, because he is fighting corruption, those who are corrupt are trying to spoil his name," the opposition leader said.
He further added that cartels who want to tarnish Matiang'i's name are doing so because they fear him and want to eliminate him so that they can have an easy way. Raila insisted that Matiang'i is clean on matters fake gold scam.
"On this issue of fake gold scam, CS Matiangi is as clean as cotton. These people who are yapping around are known cartels who are afraid of Matiang'i. We all know the history of Matiang'i, in all the positions he has held, there is a mark of competence and clean record," he added.
