Two Members of the Nairobi County Assembly (MCAs) were on Monday arraigned and charged in anti-corruption with allegedly demanding and receiving Sh1.7 Million bribe from a city businessman.
Appearing before Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, the two Jared Okoth (Mathare North) and David Mberia (Karen Ward) pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court heard that on diverse dates between April 4 and 8, 2019, the two and another suspect who was not before court conspired to commit an offence of corruption by receiving a bribe of Sh1.7 Million from Samuel Maina Kiragu, the owner of the Kiragu Waichahi School.
Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (SADPP) Joseph Riungu told the court that the two MCAs are members of the Culture and Social Services committee.
Riungu further told the court that the two allegedly demanded and received a bribe to influence a report they were writing about the school.
The court released the two MCAs on Sh1 Million bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh500, 000.
The two had been arrested on Friday last week and spend the weekend at the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission (EACC) police station.
The case will be mentioned in two weeks’ time to set the date for pre-trial.
