Youth for Kanu '92 was an influential group of politicians that was formed with an objective of railing support for the then President Daniel Torotich Arap Moi. This was prior to the first multiparty election since Kenya acquired her independence.

However, the lobby group was largely accused of being architects behind the ethnic violence directed to Kikuyu residents in the Southern and Central parts of the Rift Valley Province.

Deputy President William Ruto and former  Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo are probably the most prominent members of the youth group to hold eminent national positions. Jirongo vied for Presidency in 2017 but lost terribly.

The formidable group that was under the leadership of Jirongo included flamboyant youth then like Gerald Boimett, Sam Nyamweya, Sammy Leshore, Kigen, Rono and others.

The group literary bathed in money in 1992 and made life unbearable for a majority of Kenyans by pushing inflation.

They vigorously campaigned for the powerful Moi, whose leadership, a majority of Kenyans were tired of. But, 'the father of politics' as he was referred by his rivals was not ready to relinquish the instruments of power. Therefore, the decimated group came in handy for him and indeed delivered to his expectations.

YK'92 was the crowd that cut the cords of political and propriety of the electoral system then. Jirongo and his team went around the country donning a brown leather jacket and throwing out wads of Sh500 notes into any crowd that shouted Kanu. The Sh500 was then baptised 'Jirongo'.

When the Election results were announced, President Moi thrashed his opponents, a divided opposition.
