Residents Bonyamatuta ward, West Mugirango constituency in Nyamira County are mourning the death of a 2-year-old boy who died after drowning in River Gucha.
Locals said the deceased Kevin Nyamoi was playing with his friends when he miscalculated his moves and fell into the river.
"Nyamoi was with his friends playing near the river but, unfortunately he fell into the river. His friends raised alarm to attract members of the public," said Benjamin Onyonka.
Onyonka said members of the public rescued the boy from the river and rushed him to Kenyerere dispensary where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
"He could not survive because he developed breathing difficulties," said Onyonka.
Local administrator Protus Nyabwari warned parents against allowing their children to play near dangerous areas.
"It is sad that we lost Nyamoi. I am appealing to parents, guardians to ensure their children are safe and play far from dangerous areas to curb unnecessary deaths especially during this festive season," said the chief.
He confirmed that the body of the deceased was taken to Nyamira County Hospital morgue.
