A teachers union official in Eldoret town has welcomed calls by a section of stakeholders in the Education sector to introduce sex education in primary and secondary schools.
Chepkoilel branch Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Executive Secretary Sammy Bor says sex education will largely reduce cases of HIV/AIDs, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), teenage pregnancies and unsafe abortions among girls across the country.
“It is a good idea and to some extent, it will help in a way to instil some discipline in children. It will also enhance the girls' awareness of their bodies and issues that affect them,” said Bor who was speaking in his Eldoret office on Tuesday.
The KNUT official further said that with sex education in schools, adolescents will learn how to make informed decisions.
“I think this issue of early pregnancies is societal and it’s a big problem for all of us. We need to have concerted efforts from all angles where we require spiritual aspect and enhancing guiding and counselling in our schools,” he added.
Bor noted that sex education should be mandatory for children in primary and secondary schools so that children grow up understanding their sexuality.
He, however, said that the Ministry of Education should ensure that sex education curriculum is developed by all stakeholders.
