A section of residents in Kakamega County on Sunday rejected the census drive following claims that the enumerators were deliberately enlisting them in the wrong constituency.
The exercise was halted in Shinyinka-Itumbi village in Lurambi after the villagers accused the census officials of enlisting them in Ikolomani instead of Lurambi.
Consequently, the enumerator Mr Frederick Bandi, and John Imbidi, a village elder had to stop the exercise after objections that both are from the neighbouring constituency.
“The chief and village elder know where the boundaries lie but (they) have decided to cross into Lurambi to enlist villagers," said Mr Bernard Likanga, Shinyinka village administrator.
However, Mr Imbindi said that they were only carrying out the process as per the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) map.
He added that they only managed to cover 21 out of the 133 homes under their jurisdiction, which were covered on Saturday night before residents became hostile on Sunday morning.
“The villagers turned hostile and confronted us as we visited homes to plan for the exercise,” he said.
Kakamega County Commissioner Pauline Dola said that the exercise will proceed as planned after the issue was addressed.
A number of political leaders who participated in the census on Saturday called upon Kenyans to embrace the exercise.
