Abubakar Mohammed Banna, the driver of the ill-fated Medina bus that killed 14 people in Matuu was on Thursday arraigned at the Kithimani Law Courts and charged with manslaughter.

The accused who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe denied the charges levelled against him.

According to the prosecution, Banna was driving recklessly thus leading to the death of 14 people, with other passengers sustaining injuries.

The prosecution, however, asked the court for more time to complete investigations.

The suspect will be held at the Matuu Police Station and is set to appear again in court on Friday.

The bus was heading to Nairobi from Mandera when it rammed into a stalled truck at Matuu town in Yatta Sub-County on Wednesday morning.

The driver is said to have fled the scene after the accident.

He, however, surrendered to the Matuu Police Station at around 12am on Thursday night.

14 people including the conductor identified as Jamaludin lost their lives as several others sustained injuries in the 5am accident.

The injured passengers are recuperating at the Matuu Level Four Hospital.

Leaders from Machakos and Mandera counties have condoled with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
