The demolition started when the families were asleep.

Tango auctioneers who carried out the demolitions said they were acting on a court order obtained by the sisal estate owner Mr. Harry Horn.

According to the director of the auctioneer firm Mr. John Muthee, the land owner procured their services after the squatters refused to heed a vacate notice.

"We are not to blame for the evictions because the families had been given an opportunity to vacate peacefully but they refused," said Mr. Muthee.

Six churches were among the structures that were brought down during the demolitions.

The exercise was guarded by police led by Rongai OCPD Japheth Kioko as many of the families watched helplessly as the bulldozers ran over their settlement.

Mr Harry Horn, the owner of Athinai estate that is managed by Lomolo Sisal Company, obtained orders to evict the families on October 16.
