The number of political parties in the Coast region has risen to five following the formation of Umoja Summit Political Party (USPP).
The new political outfit is now seeking to woo Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi as the debate on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession continues to take centre stage in most public events across the nation.
The outfit was presented with a provisional certificate last week and now the founders are seeking to woo more leaders to join the bandwagon.
The party’s interim Secretary-General Naomi Cidi, revealed that the Party was formed to target the 2022 presidential contest.
She also said that the leaders from the region want to speak in one voice in order to achieve their vision when that time comes. She further said that the region has lagged behind in terms of development because its leadership has been divided, which reduces their bargaining power.
“The party was formed on the basis of bringing back the elusive unity of the region. Coast has never spoken in one voice, a reason we formed this party to advocate an end to that,” Ms Cidi told the Daily Nation.
The political outfit has revealed plans to hold a meeting next month to cement its roots in the region.
The other parties in the region are National Liberal Party, Shirikisho, Kadu Asili and Devolution Party of Kenya.
