Owners of Keroche Breweries; Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja are currently appearing at the Milimani law court over tax evasion claims.
The two were arrested on Thursday following a directive by the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji after they allegedly failed to pay tax amounting to over Sh14 billion.
The duo is expected to be charged with up to 14 charges related to tax evasion.
Ms Karanja spent the night at the Muthaiga Police Station while her husband was set free following an application by his lawyers over his medical condition.
On Thursday, Karen Hospital asked the DCI to release Mr Karanja owing to his medical condition that could have worsened had he been remanded.
“This is to satisfy that Mr Karanja is in our medical care. He has recently undergone lifesaving surgery,” said the hospital in a statement.
The business tycoons have maintained that they are innocent against the charges leveled against them.
"Am shocked by the new allegations leveled against me, my husband and Keroche Breweries and this is pure malice," she said, as quoted by Standard.
Senator James Orengo is representing the tycoons in court.
