Political analyst Ismael Nyaribo now says that the proposed constitutional amendment should not be trashed simply because of its expensive nature.
Speaking on Radio Maisha's Bunge La Maisha on Tuesday morning, Nyaribo who doubles up as a lawyer noted that Kenya can hold the poll without the government using any money from the treasury.
He said that it is possible for the government to seek funding from other countries which, if well approached, can give a grant towards the same, in exchange for economic favour.
"Sio lazima tutumie pesa zetu. Serikali inaweza pata msaada kutoka nchi zingine kwa njia ya mkopo usiolipwa, bora tu iweze kuwashawishi kwamba hiyo kura ya maoni ni ya muhimu (Its not a must that we use our money, the government can secure a grant from other countries, provided that it can convince them that the referendum is necessary)," he said.
He added that in exchange, the lender can ask for her investors to be given a chance to invest and operate in Kenya, which is not a bad deal.
"Kama malipo, ile nchi inayotoa pesa yaweza ikaulizia watu wake wafanye kazi hapa (As payment, the county giving out the money can ask to have her citizens work in Kenya)," he added.
The referendum debate was kicked off by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga after his 2018 truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Raila who is pushing for an expansion of the executive and a return to parliamentary governance system has said that the issue was one of the matters discussed and agreed on.
However, it has been opposed by Deputy President William Ruto's quarters which has termed it a plan to allocate positions to election losers who cannot secure seats democratically.
In support of the referendum, President Uhuru Kenyatta has stressed on the need for the introduction of a more inclusive government.
