National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi is expected to declare the seat vacant following the death of Ken Okoth, who was serving his second term on an ODM ticket.

Already, a number of candidates are said to be campaigning for the party's ticket, due to its popularity in Africa's second largest slam, which was at one point represented by Odinga.

ODM's Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen on Wednesday said the party will consider one of the four methods in its constitution to get a formidable candidate for the seat.

“The party Constitution [covers] the electoral college, consensus, competitive primaries and a direct ticket,” said Mr Ong’wen.

Traditionally, the party has preferred direct nominations and electoral college for by-elections due to constrained campaign time and resources.

For general polls, the party settles for competitive nominations or consensus. The party has, however, been synonymous with violence during primaries.

Mr Ong'wen said there is no preferred candidate for the Kibra seat, adding that the party will soon ask for applications.

“At the moment we don’t know if there is anybody who has declared interest because we have not invited applications,” he said on Wednesday during the second Kisumu County ODM Delegates Convention.
