Fresh from helping Kenya Morans clinch the zone five basketball championship, star player and the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP); Tyler Okari is the Startimes Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) sports personality of the month.

Okari waded off tough competition to become the sports personality for the month of June.

Some of the competitors included; Kenya sevens rugby player Andrew Amonde,  men’s double beach tennis bronze medalists; Fazal Khan and Ibrahim Yego; and beach volleyball bronze medalists; Gaudencia Makokha and Naomie Too.

His stellar performance saw Kenya enter history books by winning zone five basketball championship for the first time, and qualify for Africa games slated for the next month in Morocco.

He took home a 43" Startimes Smart TV set and a whopping Sh100,000.

Speaking after receiving the award, thanked his team mates and coach for their suport.

"I was not expecting it. It's been a surprise having been told by the coach. The award means a lot to us having worked hard as a team, it shows we are being appreciated. I would also like to thank Startimes and SJAK for this award," he said.

This was the 24th edition of the sports personality of the month awards.
