A section of Kibera residents have welcomed the decision by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) to suspend airing of James Muigai aka DJ Afro movies over alleged use of vulgar language.
The residents say that government decision is timely and will protect children who are used to watching the narrated movies that air on popular Gikuyu TV.
Sophia Akoth, a resident in Kibera's Highrise, says that DJ Afro movies have adult content that negatively impact on children.
She claims that the movies have negatively influenced the behavior of young children.
“It is the right step the government has taken and such content should not air on TV anymore,” she said.
Reuben Simiyu, a resident, said that DJ Afro is allegedly using the movies to sale illicit content to the young people.
“We have been waiting for this decision for the sake of our young people who are being exposed to negative content,” he said.
Mr Simiyu asked the government to completely ban DJ Afro’s movies.
However, some residents say that the government decision to suspend DJ Afro's movies is ill advised.
“I don’t see anything wrong with DJ Afro’s movies and he should be left to do his thing,” Martin Kinoro said.
He said that the DJ has impacted positively on youths and encourages them to pursue their talents through the movies he narrates.
“It is purely malicious for KFCB to suspend DJ Afro's show on Gikuyu TV when it has in away impacted positively on young people,” he said.
On Wednesday, KCFB met with Gikuyu TV top managers and DJ Afro himself.
The film board said that Afro’s program will be suspended until some changes including the time of airing is done.
DJ Afro's program airs daily on Gikuyu TV and is mostly dominated by Indian action movies with the DJ narrating the happenings.
The DJ often translates the movies from foreign languages to Kiswahili.
The DJ has a strong fan base of young people who glue to TV to watch his narrated movies.
