At Strathmore University, Uhuru expressed his disappointment on how his team has 'let him down in handling' SMEs in the country.

"I am not going to read this. If I do, I'll be lying to people. I am quite embarrassed with my own government and I have to take the blame," said Uhuru.

He added: "We have failed small traders and it's time we change our attitude. You play an important role in our economy and we must be ashamed for letting you down."

During the meeting, Uhuru also seems to blame Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on the inefficiency in Gikomba market, which hosts at least 15,000 traders.

This is the first time a sitting president refused to read a scripted speech which could have highlighted challenges, achievements and solutions.

Instead, Uhuru, who accused politicians of abandoning voters, said a similar meeting should be held in a month to iron out the inefficiencies.
