After the ban on plastic bags, many supermarkets around the country stopped offering free packaging services citing extra costs in buying alternative bags.

The motion was sponsored by Ann Mulwale (nominated) who noted that supermarkets were exploiting customers by charging extra costs for shopping bags.

"It is very unfair for customers in the county after shopping to still pay for the extra cost. This is tantamount to fleecing poor Kenyans," an MCA said.

According to the motion, providing packaging was a core function of supermarkets. The assembly stated that many shoppers were inconvenienced due to lack of packaging services.

Mulwale highlighted the health hazards shoppers were exposed to due to packaging together detergents and foodstuffs.
