North Eastern Regional commander Mohamed Birik has issued a three-month amnesty to youths who have joined Al-Shabaab terror group to surrender.
Birik says that there is information that some youth in Garissa, Mandera, Isiolo, and Wajir are allegedly collaborating with terror militants.
Speaking in Hulugho Town in Garissa on Saturday, Birik said that the government will pardon youth who will desert and denounce the terror group.
“We have issued a three-month amnesty to anyone who has joined Al-Shabaab or aiding terror activities in Northern Eastern to surrender to the police,” he said.
Birik revealed that an attack on a bus that saw two non-Muslims killed along the Garissa Ijara road three weeks ago was planned by a local.
He said that the local allegedly guided the terror militants who ambushed the bus and killed two people.
The commander said that the government will not relent in fighting terror militants.
He asked locals to be more vigilant and report suspicious people to authorities.
Last week, a section of Garissa leaders led by senator Yusuf Haji appealed to the national government to boost security in the region.
The leaders claimed that Al-Shabaab militants are penetrating the region to carry out attacks.
On Monday last week, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i issued a stern warning to terror militants, saying that the government will not entertain them.
He said that security will be beefed across North Eastern region.
