Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to National Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Henry Rotich to stop implementation of the 16 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel and petroleum products.
The MP says that he will organise and lead protests in Nairobi if the CS does not stop the VAT implementation by Tuesday next week.
Oluoch says that the VAT on fuel is hurting common Kenyans.
Speaking to journalists in Mathare on Sunday, the ODM lawmaker accused CS Rotich of disrespecting Members of Parliament (MPs).
"We voted and suspended the implementation of the 16 percent VAT on fuel but CS Rotich has gone against our decision as MPs, we will show him that we are the lawmakers," the vocal MP said.
Oluoch asked Nairobians to get ready for the peaceful protests.
He said that he will also initiate a motion to impeach CS Rotich.
The ODM MP asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to step in and stop the VAT implementation.
On Saturday, the Energy and Regulatory Commission (ERC) implemented the 16 percent VAT on fuel.
On Wednesday last week MPs had voted to suspend the implementation of the VAT on fuel to September 1, 2020.
