Three people have been arrested in relation to the brutal murder of local administrator in Tharaka Nithi County.
Kamaindi location chief Japheth Mayau Mukangu was cornered and lynched by his subjects on Tuesday evening, slashing him to death using their machetes.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Wednesday announced that a probe has been launched into the matter and three suspects have been nabbed.
"Three suspects have so far been arrested by Detectives following the brutal killing of 57yr-old Japhet Mayau Mukengu; Chief for Kamaindi Location in Tharaka Nithi County. The Chief had gone to settle a case when the suspects attacked him with pangas before setting his body on fire," the DCI tweeted.
The chief was reportedly lynched in relations to his brother Gikweru Mukangu's alleged involvement in the murder of a fellow villager in December 2018.
The skeleton of Gitonga Kabuibe was found near Thuci River three weeks ago. Mukangu is also said to have detained goats belonging to the deceased after trespassing into his land.
The administrator found himself in trouble when he went to his brother's home where he encountered the angry mob that was baying for Mukangu's blood.
Mukangu managed to escape. The mob then burnt the body of the deceased.
