According to a Washington Post report, the decision was made on Sunday at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida where Donald Trump was vacationing and was joined by members of the top brass of the US security apparatus.

It was on the second Sunday of the president's holiday vacation according to those privy with the details on the internal deliberations on the strike.

A debate on whether to kill Qasem, a top Iranian military commander said to have had American blood in his hands, raged at the Trump-owned resort.

Having heard the views of top-level military officials, the US president finally issued the green light for the sensitive operation.

“It was tremendously bold and even surprised many of us,” a senior official told the Washington Post.

According to Newsfeed, Trump ordered his aides to start planning for a strike on the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force after an American contractor was killed reportedly by an Iranian-backed militia group.

National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Vice President Mike Pence were well aware of a plan to eliminate Qasem as President Trump had made them aware of it.

Trump has strongly defended the killing of Qasem Soleimani said that it was aimed at stopping a war and not starting one.
