Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung'wah has raised his fears about the calls to scrutinize the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report released last month further.

The report suggests several amendment proposals, including the formation of a powerless Prime Minister seat and compulsory National Youth Service (NYS) admission for the youth.

Politicians allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, have been pushing for a return of the document back to Kenyans for a review, which Ichung'wah says could be a plot to include some changes.

He says that there are plans to factor in changes aimed at satisfying the interest of a few people, which should not be the case.

“If there are changes to what’s in the report, they must be pro-people, not pro-leadership matters,” he told the People Daily in an interview on Wednesday.

The MP, an ally of Deputy President William Ruto who was initially opposed to the changes, said that it's important that the report is implemented in its original form.

He stated that there is a need for the political class to honour the constitution and not change it for the sake of a few people. Adding that Kenyans want the report passed as they proposed it.

“We must protect our democracy by respecting and honouring our Constitution," added the vocal parliamentarian.

Ichung'wah is among politicians who were initially pushing for a parliamentary implementation of the document, which they have termed quicker and cheaper compared to a referendum.

But the Raila and Uhuru camp have argued that such sensitive changes, which are expected to affect the lives of all Kenyans, can't be left in the hands of a handful of Kenyans to decide on.
