The Eldoret Family Bank Half Marathon has been renamed Family Group Eldoret Half Marathon.
Arguably the oldest half marathon in the Uasin Gishu's capital, the race will be marking its 12th edition this Sunday.
Addressing the press at an Eldoret hotel on Friday, the Marathons' director Richard Metto further revealed that the route for this year's edition has also been changed.
The move, according to Metto is meant to help reduce congestion in Eldoret town and also address cases of cheating.
In the past, the Marathon route has been around the streets of Eldoret town Central Business District (CBD).
“The new route unveiled will see the 21 Kilometres men and women race commence at Tendwo High School in Talget through Illula, Kapsoya, Moi Girls and end at Zion Mall,” said Metto.
There will also be a 5 kilometres corporate race that will commence at Kao la Amani and end at Zion Mall.
Winners in both men and women race will pocket Sh250,000 each with those fininisning in the second and third positions receiving a cash price of Sh150,000 and Sh90,000 respectively.
Already 700 participants have registred to participate in the race that is known for nurturing athletes that have later on turned into top international sportsmen in the likes of Lille, Berlin and Cardiff Half Marathons winner Geoffrey Kamworor and 2012 Olympic marathon champion who is also the 2013 World Championships gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich.
The Family Group Eldoret Half Marathon is sponsored by Family Bank and its sister companies – Kenya Orient Insurance, Kenya Orient Life Assurance, Daykio Plantations and Alpha Africa Asset Managers to a tune of KES 10 million.
Part of the money collected during the race will be used for the education of autism children at Sosiani Primary in Uasin Gishu County.
