Some 14 people, including the brewer, were early Thursday arrested after they were found drinking illicit brew in a local den in Gitaru, Kikuyu Sub-County.
Speaking after the arrest, Gitaru Chief Richard Kimotho said that some area residents reported about the den which is a one roomed house among rental houses in the area.
He added that those who reported were those who live in the plot hence they have been disturbed by the business.
Kimotho said that he was escorted by other two chiefs in the region and they ambushed the den and managed to arrest the 14, including the seller. He added that those arrested were drinking the illicit brew locally known as chang’aa and he added that the den is always open as early as 6am.
He stated that the den has been in existence for a month now and people leaving around could not know it was a den as it was inside a plot where people live. He applauded the locals who reported the incident.
He, however, condemned landlords who allow such businesses to run where people live, sending a warning to them as they were encouraging the business.
"We have managed to arrest those who were inside and we thank those who reported this and urge locals to emulate this example. However, this is a warning to all landlords who rent such houses to these brewers to run this illegal business," said Kimotho.
