More than 30 current and former governors have a date with the Senate to defend reports by auditor-general on suspected wastage and misappropriation of public funds in the last five years while they were at the helm of the county offices.

Begining the month of April the county chiefs will be called upon to defend their performance in the Senate. They are among 33 county heads expected to appear before the Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee (PAIC) for questioning, sessions that have in the past kicked up a storm as governors accuse senators of using the forum to settle political scores.

However, out of the 33 governors, 14 governors will respond to misappropriation that happened under their watch while the other 19 will should the misappropriations that were committed by their predecessors.

Among the 14 governors who are still in office and are expected to defend their usage of public funds includes, Mombasa's Hassan Joho, Alfred Mutua(Machakos), Cyprian Awiti(Homa Bay), Kivutha Kibwana(Makueni), Mwangi Wa Iria (Murang'a), Salim Mvurya(Kwale), John Nyagarama(Nyamira), Patrick Khaemba(Trans Nzoia),  Ali Roba (Mandera), Moses Lenokulal(Samburu), Wycliffe Oparanya(Kakamega), Hussein Dhadho(Tana River), Martin Wambora (Embu), Jackson Mandago(Uasin Gishu), and Cornel Rasanga(Siaya).

In Homabay, Awiti is on the spot for failure to account for Sh8.5 million that was set aside to buy a 10 acres land to construct "Gor Mahia Stadium".

In Mombasa, Joho will have to answer on the whereabouts of Sh289 million paid to a garbage collection firm yet heaps of garbage are still rampant in Mombasa town.

In Kakamega, under a programme known as ‘Oparanya Care’ targeting pregnant mothers, money was deposited into beneficiaries’ accounts long after the mothers had delivered.

Last Friday, Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye issued a notice requiring the governors to appear before the Senate committee for questioning on diverse dates between April and July.
