Police in Bungoma county has arrested 14 people suspected to members of a criminal gang that has been terrorizing Mt. Elgon residents.
The security officers are however still pursuing three more members of the group.
According to the county commissioner James Kiganda, the three led by Timothy Kiptanui, popularly known as Cheparakachi, are top commanders of the criminal gang.
Kiganda noted that the three had fled the area but he expressed his confidence that the security agencies will soon arrest them.
The commissioner further hailed the relationship between the locals and security officers which he said led to the arrest of the 14.
“Our partnership with the community has enabled us to arrest the 14 and we are optimistic that will catch the remaining group,” Kiganda noted.
Meanwhile, residents who had fled the area for fear of being attacked by the gang have since returned to their homes and are now preparing their lands for planting.
