In a bid to expand it's revenue collection techniques, the county government of Nyamira has imposed punitive penalities on a number of environmental related matters.

In a circular originating from the department of finance, those will the habit of urinating or relieving themselves aimlessly in public territories will now have to part with Sh500 as instant fine.

For prostitutes, Nyamira may not be a safe environment to operate in following the gazettment of the new by laws. Once detected by county reinforcement officers, prostitutes will have to part with Sh1000.

The same amount will apply those perceived to be idle within the town. According to the government, idleness encourages laziness thus poor production from along county residents.

And for those polluting rivers in terms of industrial it chemical emissions, they will have to part with a whooping Sh500, 000. Should one fail to comply, the county government will take legal actions.

However, the by-laws have attracted criticism with a section of county residents accusing those in leadership of failing to 'think out of the box'.

"This cannot he revenue collection tactic. What if we don't have people urinating, emitting chemicals or doing prostitution? These people have to wake up," said Maina Kiage.

James Ombati added: "How are they going to detect if one is doing prostitution? Don't we have lovers using lodgings and bars for resting? This is very funny."

For the past six years, Governor John Nyagarama has been struggling to stamp his authority in the county government with residents often accusing him of maladministration.
