Joseph Boit, the father of the deceased former 400 metres hurdles World Champion Nicholas Bett has revealed the first time he saw the lifeless body of his beloved son.
Boit said the 28-year-old athlete’s Toyota Landcruiser hit a bump when he was on the phone with his wife.
“My daughter-in-law called me and informed me that something might have happened to Bett as her call had been suddenly disconnected as they were speaking. I immediately called him but there was no response. Later, someone picked up the phone and told me that the owner of the phone had been involved in an accident. He then disconnected,” Bett's father told the Standard.
“I called again and had to plead with the person on the other end to tell me if my son was alive or dead. That is when I received the shocking news,” he added.
Bett was involved in the accident on Wednesday while on his way home after he returned from the Africa Athletics Championships in Nigeria.
Police said he may have hit a road bump at Sochoi area before losing control and rolling several times.
The body of the fallen hero is being preserved at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town awaiting burial arrangements.
