Croatia booked a World Cup semi-final place to face England on Wednesday after a penalty shootout win against Russia on Saturday night.
The win brought a memorable night for another University of Eldoret student who had backed on Croatia to win.
Newton Simiyu said that he placed a bet on Croatia to win the match after the game went into extra time play when the odds were at 13.00.
The first-year student pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering said he deposited Sh16,500 he had been sent by his mother the previous day to clear the remaining fee arrears with.
The 20-year-old said he couldn't believe his eyes after seeing Croatia's Ivan Rakitic slip his penalty into the bottom left, sending the Russian goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev the wrong way as Croatia won.
The win earned the student Sh214,500 which he said he plans to clear the fee arrears on Monday when the banks open its doors.
"I am going to clear the fee arrears on Monday morning and the remaining amount, I still don't know what to do with it but hopefully by the end of the week I would have known," he noted.
