Angelina Ajwang, the mother to Kibra MP Ken Okoth fought desperately to prevent the cremation of her son's body.
Ajwang is reported to have sent messages to two MPs from Nyanza on Friday night, seeking their help and support in stopping the cremation process that had been scheduled for Saturday.
Ajwang unsuccessfully reached out to legislators from Migori and Kisumu counties. One of the MPs is said to have called her back before sharing the message he had received from her with other Luo MPs.
“Jodalawa (my kinsmen)…I just got a message from Mama Ken and I called her back...she is pleading for help so that she can bury her son...She sounded so desperate...” read a message from one of the MPs contacted by Ajwang.
ODM chairman John Mbadi on Sunday noted that there was little the legislators could do to stop the cremation as it was a family decision.
He also revealed that the National Assembly had put plans in place to fly the late Okoth's body back to his village for burial.
“The whole thing was clouded in so much confusion. Parliament had organised how to fly Okoth’s body to his village, but we were told to hold on and wait for communication from the family. Unfortunately, what we heard next was that the body had been cremated,” Mbadi stated.
