Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has expressed his happiness after the government agreed to compensate Kyanguli fire tragedy victims.
In a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Mbui said he was satisfied with the government's decision even though the payments came with a lot of struggle.
"I wish to thank the government for finally seeing it fit to pay the parents and guardians of the victims of Kyanguli fire tragedy which occurred in 2001," the MP said in part in the post.
"Though the payment of 54 million has come after a long struggle that included parents camping in the government offices and petitioning the government in Parliament. God is good all the time and his time is the best," he added.
Mbui noted that although the lives of the children who lost their lives can't be valued, the government did a good thing by compensating the parents.
The legislature had earlier asked the government to compensate the victims and expressed his hope that the CS Treasury Henry Rotich will address the matter in Parliament.
In March 2006, High Court Judge Joseph Segon awarded the affected parents Sh40.9 million where every parent was to get Sh600,000.
Since then, the amount has not been paid a situation which made the affected parents launch a protest in Machakos town on February 24th 2017.
Kyanguli fire tragedy occurred on the night of March 24, 2001, when a dormitory caught fire at Kyanguli Secondary School in Machakos sub-county, Machakos.
Sixty-seven pupils died during the incident, 58 of them were buried in six mass graves inside the school compound.
