It may seem awkward trying to compare and contrast the fortunes of Kenya Premier League (KPL) side AFC Leopards with the English Premier League (EPL) giants Liverpool.

As we speak, Liverpool is patched at the top of the EPL table with 66 points after 27 matches, while AFC Leopards is bottom of the KPL table with a meager 10 points after 14 rounds of matches.

That notwithstanding, there’s one thing that makes these two teams equal if not common in a fair soccer high table.

The two teams once shared a sponsor. In 1987, AFC Leopards and Liverpool were both sponsored by the Crown Paints.

The front part of the Liverpool red shirt and AFC Leopards’ read and black jersey (by then) had the words Crown Paints written in white.

Despite being a rich Club in 1987 by any standard courtesy of the Crown Paints Sponsorship, AFC Leopards did not win the title. Perennial rivals Gor Mahia won the 1987 KPL title.

But in England, the Crown Paints Sponsorship apparently propelled Liverpool to title triumph during the 1987/1988 Premier League title.

AFC Leopards has won 12 KPL titles, the last one in 1998, while Liverpool are 20-times-EPL champions with the last one coming way back in 1990.
