Ever since the much-hyped handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader Raila Odinga took over from the nation's unstable politics, Kenyans have been expressing optimism that the truce will last up to 2022 and even beyond.

However, going by the latest political developments in the country, it could be argued that the handshake deal might be falling apart.

That Raila Odinga's close allies have started reading mischief in the deal could spell doom for the handshake.

According to the latest statement by the Embakasi Member of Parliament Babu Owino, the only way Kenyans can applaud the deal is by a referendum. This he said, should happen within a year from the time the handshake took effect. But looking at events, the country is not edging any closer to a referendum.

Another thing that casts doubt to the effectiveness of the handshake is the fact that Uhuru and Raila failed to secure a loan from the Chinese government in their latest trip.

Just recently, Uriri MP Mark Nyamita had claimed the duo had gone to China to assure them of the country's political fate after 2022 and even beyond

One thing that now emerges is that, did the Chinese company read malice in their plans?

It is now upon Kenyans to watch the progress of the handshake to ascertain whether it is working up to the expectations or if it's on the verge of falling apart.
