Much has been said and done in regard to empowering the girl child. Rescue centres and vigorous campaigns have been organized in favour of her in recent years.

But little is being said about our boys. I recently witnessed a group of boys being fished out of a movie -watching centre by the police at Menyinkwa, a few kilometres from Kisii town.

While I don’t object to their aim of getting fun, the kind of fun they chose is my concern. The boys crowd to these centres during weekends and in the evenings after school. Some stay there till late in the night. All this while the girl child is probably studying somewhere.

The kind of movies they watch have very little or no informative content at all. They are characterized by local commentators such as DJ Afro who have translated the movies to slang’.

These commentators use very profane language which consequently is fed to the minds of these young lads. The end results of these so-called entertainment centres are young men whose heads are full of profanity, thoughts of violence and immorality.

With time they lose the mental ability to concentrate on serious matters such as academics. They end up becoming almost useless in life and many join the league of ‘woman eaters’.

It is time we paid attention to the boy child
