Police officers in Belgut are holding a 15-year-old boy accused of stabbing his stepfather to death on Sunday night in Chepkoin village, Kericho County.

The incident was confirmed by Belgut Sub-County Police Commander Philip Okello who said the deceased identified as Joel Kipngetich and the accused had quarrelled over a plate of food. 

Okello observed that the boy, a standard six boy slashed his stepfather with a machete.

"At around 10pm Sunday the deceased picked a quarrel with his stepson over supper and the angry minor, in turn, picked a machete and fatally slashed the old man in the chest," said Okello

He said that when neighbours arrived at the scene they found the 50-year-old man lying in a pool of blood and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

"He had a deep cut wound on his upper chest inflicted by a sharp object. He was rushed to Sosiot Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," he said. 

The police boss said that the boy fled after committing the crime and attempted suicide. He noted that the boy was arrested in a nearby village where he had taken an acaricide in an attempt to kill himself.

 He was taken to Sosiot Hospital where he was treated and discharged on Monday morning. He is set to appear in court after police complete their investigations. 

The body of the deceased was taken to the Kericho County Hospital mortuary.
