In a tweet, the DP Ruto posted a series of pictures he took with Ms Kimathi at his office, which he captioned. "Pleased to host Mukami Kimathi, widow of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, Karen office, Nairobi County."

He went ahead to ask people to celebrate the country's heroes by visiting them.

"Let's celebrate our heroes; pay homage to their commitment and faithfulness to the cause and cement their status as patriots. Their indomitable spirit, sacrifice, bravery to confront and overcome adversity is admirable and worthy of emulating," he said.

Dedan Kimathi was the military and spiritual leader during the Mau Mau revolution. He was among those who led the struggle against the British colonial regime. Unfortunately, he was captured and executed by the British government.

Kimathi among other Mau Mau fighters are considered as heroes by Kenyans who celebrate them in different ways.

His statue was build in Nairobi's CBD in 2007.

Not long ago, Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua claimed that the county government of Nairobi had neglected Dedan Kimathi's statue and even swore to personally take care of it.
