Public health officers in Kisii have banned hawking of food in Keumbu market in Nyaribari Chache constituency.
According to Joel Obare, a public health officer, anyone found hawking food in the market will be arrested and taken to court.
"It has come to our attention that people selling food and those owning food joints at the roadside do not meet the required health standards and this poses a health risk. Hawking of food has been banned until further notice," said Obare while addressing residents of Keumbu on Thursday at Keumbu social hall.
Obare regretted that some those hawking food at the market operate without valid licences.
He appealed to traders at the market to report anyone hawking food adding that the ban is already in force.
The officer urged women intending to hawk food to maintain high levels of hygiene and apply for licences before they are allowed to continue with their food business.
"We do not want to see diseases such as cholera and typhoid out breaking. Locals should eat from hotels where hygiene is high to curb the outbreak of diseases related to dirty foods," he stated.
