The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party wants amendments to revert the country to a parliamentary system, Siaya Senator James Orengo has said.
The former Prime Minister Raila Odinga-led side has been in the front line in pushing for constitutional amendments through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Orengo, in an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday, said that ODM wants a system where the executive sits in the Parliament, as opposed to the current one where they are outside.
"ODM prefers a parliamentary system of government where we have the Executive in Parliament, being accountable to the people," he said, according to a tweet by Citizen TV.
However, Orengo pointed out that this should not be translated to mean that ODM wants a setup where the executive is appointed by the parliament on behalf of the remaining Kenyans.
The Senate Minority Leader stated that the idea is to make the executive directly accountable to the parliament.
"Some people confuse a parliamentary system with the existence of the office of the Prime Minister. A parliamentary system means that you have the executive in Parliament and being accountable to parliament in a direct fashion," he noted.
The remarks come at a time when a section of the party members have been calling for a review of the BBI report, saying that it excludes some of the proposals they wanted to see.
They have also been pushing for a referendum, arguing that the changes must be owned by Kenyans and not a selected group of politicians.
