Eight Kenyans, three Rwandan nationals and one Ugandan have been arrested for attempting to hack Equity Bank systems.
The suspects were arrested in Rwanda by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
“This group was arrested while in the process of hacking into the bank system to steal money from clients’ accounts,” RIB said on Friday as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The 12 suspects were hiding in Rwanda after defrauding Equity Banks in Kenya and Uganda.
RIB has pointed out that it has handed over the case file to Kenyan and Ugandan authorities for action to be taken against the suspects.
“RIB urges the public to remain vigilant and always share information that can be used to prevent crime,” said the investigating team.
This is not the first time a Kenyan has been arrested in Rwanda. In September, Charles Kinuthia was arrested in Rwanda for defrauding Rwandan nationals.
According to Rwanda police, Kinuthia faked a wealth conference at Kigali Convention Centre where hundreds of residents paid the entrance fees but the conference never took place.
He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined Sh325,400.
