National women volleyball team Malkia Strikers have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after over 15 years of trying.
In a post on Facebook after their hard-fought win against Nigeria, the victorious Kenyan ladies could not hide their joy.
"Qualified for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Malkia Strikers back to the top," the Facebook post read.
They prevailed in all the three sets winning 25-15, 25-21 and 25-12 cruising to the Olympics for the first time in over ten years.
The victory comes just days after the women's volleyball team humbled Cameroon to reach the final qualification round.
At the Tokyo Olympics, they will have the opportunity to jostle for global glory against some of the world's best volleyball teams.
Competition at the Olympics promises to be cutthroat.
Qualification for the global showpiece is a victory for Malkia Strikers, as it raises the profile of Kenya not just as a volleyball powerhouse on the continent, but also as a force to reckon with on the global stage.
The next challenge now is to ensure they secure adequate funding, that will go a long way in their preparation for Tokyo.
