Flooding, stagnant water, pollution, and impassable roads have become the norm every time it rains in Mwariki area in Nakuru County. This is part of the escalating environmental degradation in this region.
With a poor waste disposal mechanism, the situation is worsened when it rains. Residents have resolved to dump waste in the thickets that dominate this area.
Paths in the area are becoming impassable due to the piling up waste, something that risks the lives of locals, especially children.
According to locals, they are staring at the emergence of water-borne diseases, unless action is taken immediately.
Speaking to Hivisasa, Samuel Ogola, a resident said the area floods when it rains and stagnant water poses a risk for young children who may fall in the water.
“We walk long distance to get to the main road when it rains here. Stagnant water that accumulates here when it rains is posing a health risk to residents as well as a danger to children who play in the area,” said Ogola.

People living in the area are further worried of the growing pile of garbage as some of the area residents are disposing their garbage in the area.

The authorities have managed to set up water collection points, but poor waste disposal methods are threatening the safety of this water.
Speaking to Hivisasa on Thursday, Mary Kamau, called for proper waste disposal in the area to avoid contamination of the water system.
Kamau noted that locals without proper sanitation systems have converted the thickets in the area for human waste disposal.
“This area needs to be cleaned and the thickets cleared. The area is causing environmental and health problems especially to our children,” said Kamau.
