The constituency is set to go for a by-election in November following the death of Ken Okoth, who served the region for two terms on ODM ticket.

Dr Ruto, in the company of neighboring Lang'ata MP Nixon Korir, had a brief conversation with Kibra people, perhaps his first in the region.

He promised to return on Sunday, where he will likely campaign for Jubilee party candidate in the polls. Cheering locals gave him the date as he nodded.

"Today I came for education matters but I will come another day for those other issues (politics). Are you really ready for this? Are you sure? There is someone there who seems not ready for me.

"But I will come back. When shall you be free to receive me? Okay, let it be on Sunday. Let those in charge take care of this so that we can come back on Sunday," he said.

Jubilee party on Monday cleared former Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga to run for the seat after days of differences within the party.

“He (Mariga) came in and presented his papers for the interview, which is a vetting of sorts. There are 19 candidates and all of them have to go through the interview, some of them may be dropped,” said Albert Memusi.

ODM party, the clear favourite to clinch the seat, is expected to conduct nominations on Saturday, with 11 candidates having been cleared to contest.
