According to the police, the trio was nabbed while on transit to Busia to 'clean' the fake money, which included fake US dollars, with the suspects including Bungoma Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO).

The police said that they were tipped off about the crime being committed by the three, before pouncing on them and recovering fake US dollars amounting to $41,500.

Also found on them was Sh2000 fake Kenyan currency, which was in the DCIO Joseph Kahindi's pockets, with interrogations revealing that he had ordered the two to accompany him to clean the money.

The officers made first revelations after being ordered to lie on the ground at the site of arrest, before being taken in for further questioning, where the junior officers said that they were just obeying orders.

Only the two juniors were armed at the time, while the DCIO was not armed.

The incident has since been confirmed by Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti, who says that he has sent officers from Nairobi to investigate the matter.

The three were released on Wednesday morning pending ongoing investigations, and the DCIO ordered to hand over to his deputy as the probe continues.
