Special vessels were deployed in the Indian Ocean as Kenyans for the first time witnessed a military ocean parade conducted by the Kenya Navy during the 55th Mashujaa Day celebrations that were held at Mama Ngina Drive on Sunday.
Kenya Navy pulled out twenty-one gun salutes that left Kenyans in screams of shock and happiness.
As Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) had revealed in a tweet, the parade started off with speed boats that were running parallel to each other, in it kind formation, before the Kenya Navy Ship, Jasiri, concluded with firing the shots.
1. KN Shujaa
Major Hesbon Mugane was the one steering this vessel. It has been in operation since 1997 when it was brought into the country. It sails at a speed of 22 knots which translates to 40.7km/h on the land.
2. KN Harambee
This vessel also arrived in the country in 1997 just as KN Shujaa. Major Faith Hariri Magane, the first female commanding officer, was in the lead. It sails at 22 notes, which is equal to 40km/h on the road.
3. Umoja
This is Kenya Navy ship which was being steered by Major Paul Kariuki assisted by Captain Salome Mwikali. The ship arrived in the country in 1987 and can sail at a speed of 35 knots or 68.75km/h.
4. MV Doria
This vessel belongs to Kenya Coast Guard and was given to them in the year 2018. It can move at speed of 35 knots which is or 64km/hr.
5. RV Mtafiti was under the watch of Major Abel Murimi. It arrived in 2014 and is able to sail at a speed of 14 knots or 25.90km/h.
