Despite the civilisation the world is currently enjoying, a section of people have remained unmoved, sticking to ancient practices.

One of such is the continued practise of some traditional behaviours, a good instance being in Luo Nyanza where the ancient culture of night running remains alive.

But how do these night runners manage to do their job without being caught? Here is how they do it.

1. Running naked

One would ask why they cannot just defy the urge to leave their homes at night and sleep instead.

However, according to my grandfather, Onguko K'Owino of Kamagaga, Kano Plains, these people are under a satanic influence and have to do it.

Therefore, one of their mechanisms to ensure that they don't get caught in case of an ambush is running naked.

This makes them slippery and also unnoticeable, considering that most are dark and operate at midnight.

2. Baboon behaviour

It is impossible to engage them in a chase as they do not run in a straight line.

Instead, they run in zigzags, hide behind trees and fences and at times climb trees to ensure that you do not get hold of them.

This added to the darkness makes it impossible to apprehend these people who enjoy supernatural powers, claims my grandfather.

3. Befriend dogs

They are known people, usually neighbours and fellow villagers, who are just normal at daytime but turn at night to deny their fellow villagers sleep.

Therefore, they befriend dogs as they visit other people's (their victims at night) homesteads at day, and as is common with dogs, they wag their tails when the runners visit at night, allowing them to interrupt your sleep.

Disturbant dogs are poisoned to give the invaders an opportunity to kick your door and pour sand on the roof to wake you up.

Now you know.
