Fifteen Members of County Assembly from Migori county were on Sunday rushed to various private hospitals in Mombasa County after suffering from food poisoning. The ward reps alongside some county staff suffered from diarrhea and vomiting thought it was cholera. However, a doctor who treated some of the MCAs said they were all treated for food poisoning."Basically, this means that the food they ate was not cooked well that is why they suffered from food poisoning. We treated quite a number of them who thought it was cholera but we confirmed it's not," an anonymous doctor said as quoted by the Nation. One of the affected MCAs, Joseph Hoyo, of Makerero Ward in Kuria West revealed that they ate chicken, meat, fish, rice and chapati in one of the hotels in Mombasa on Saturday night before they fell ill. "We were booked at a hotel in Mombasa for three days induction. We were 57 MCAs but only 15 MCAs were affected. I almost died due to diarrhea and vomiting. I was the most affected. The rest were afraid of me; they thought I had cholera," said Hoyo.Masaba MCA William Abedi noted that four of the MCAs, Caroline Okere, Gerishon Owii, Joseph Mugosi Hoyo and Nildad Bagane were in critical condition and are expected to be airlifted for further treatment in Nairobi.
"As the assembly, we are deeply disturbed by the incident. Family members are calling asking about our health status. This is an unfortunate incident. Samples were taken to the laboratory," Abedi said.
